Why was he important?
Bach is considered to be one of the greatest (perhaps even the greatest!) of Western classical composers. He wrote music for many types of instruments during the Baroque period, a time when art was very ornate and complicated. He was a master of counterpoint, which is the technique of using many different melodies at the same time. He wrote over 1,000 pieces of music, each of which have strong emotions and complicated structures. For centuries, many composers have studied Bach’s techniques for writing beautiful, balanced, and complex music.

Bach was a church organist, and much of his music was written for church services.
Bach had 20 children, and a few of them became famous musicians, too.
Bach once went to prison because he tried to quit his job. He still wrote music while in jail!
